Oklahoma Highway Patrol Memorial

"OFFICERS ARMED WITH shotguns and M-16 military rifles closed in on a home at Caddo in their final search for fugitive killers Claude Dennis and Michael Lancaster. Seconds later a gun battle exploded that left the pair dead as they made a final dash for freedom from the Ernest Slack home toward a stolen pickup. They had 10 guns with them-including two taken from two highway patrolmen they had killed near Kenefic less than 20 minutes earlier." (From the May 26, 1978 Durant Daily Democrat)

Killed in the battle were Second Lieutenant James Pat Grimes, Trooper, Houston F. "Pappy" Summers, and Trooper Billy G. Young.

This memorial, located in Boland Park, is dedicated to the memory of those brave men who lost their lives in the line of duty.
